Seeing as there are other 4wd build threads now and Im bored here is the car that I spend all my cash on.
I bought it about 2 years ago. It was standard with a 2 inch suspension lift and 3 inch bodylift, factory rear locker, 32 inch mud terrains, the gay front bar and aftermarket speakers. I thrashed it for a year as it was then wanted to do harder tracks so Ive done the following since then: 35 inch centipedes, Cheezy Racing front bar, Cheezy Racing rear bar and chopped rear quarter panels, Cheezy Racing sliders, Hi mount winch with amsteel blue rope, Pacies and a 2.5 inch exhaust, Electronic ignition, An extended rotor button, 2nd battery Pirhana dual battery system A Sony head unit from one of my old cars A Boss Grande Air compressor and 15 litre tank. An ARB front locker. Lightforce spotlights. Fitted an EF falcon alternator. Ive also done the usual stuff like replaced the clutch with a better one, replaced a few power steering pumps, starter motors, alternators because mud kills everything in a hurry. I smashed it pretty hard into a tree once too but its fixed now. Its going to be off the road from this weekend for a month or 2 while I fix some things to get it ready for a Tasmania trip at the end of the year. The throwout bearing has died, it needs a good cleanup on the inside from being submersed in mud, Im going to move the 2nd battery to inside the car, the unis and engine mounts all need replacing, the body mounts need straightening, the carby needs to be rebuilt to work on petrol again and I have to flush the radiator. Good times. Here are some photos. Last edited by Dansedgli on Mon May 04, 2009 9:47 am, edited 2 times in total. |

When you head up and out of that wet clay hole, and up those deep slippery clay ruts, you want tyres like that.
A good mod for many modified 4wd's is to fit longer travel shock absorbers, and i mean longer travel, say 4" longer when fully open. Most shocks fitted to 2" lift kits aren't any longer than stock. The reason they aren't longer is because it means less part numbers and you can't make them longer without also extending the bump stops. Heaps of people fit longer shocks but don't extend the bump stops, and soon they have damaged the foot valve of expensive shocks and they don't work anymore. A 4" longer open length shock will have a closed length about 2" more than stock, which means the bump stops need to be extended by 2". A side benefit of extending the bump stops is that bigger wheels won't foul the guards etc as much. Since the vehicle already has 2" lifted coils, extending the bump stops 2" will be fine because you will still have the same upwards suspension travel as stock. You will have 2" more downwards travel than stock, which is good stuff. You would need to check that the longer shocks don't cause problems with the driveshafts, panhard rods, steering components, brake lines, diff breathers, etc. The increased flex will put more stress on the leading and trailing arms, and bushs. The bushs may not last as long. From memory 80series cruiser front shocks are at least 2" longer and will fit straight into the front of your maverick, maybe the rears too with mods. I could check the lengths in a shock catalogue if you want. PM me if you like.

the only thing mines missing is the factory rear locker You dont want one! I cant wait to replace mine with an ARB. It doesnt stay locked on tough tracks. Its a pita. A tightened factory LSD is the way to go if you dont want an air locker imo. |

Woot! Just won an EFI setup on ebay for cheap.
Now I dont need to rebuild the carby. Just have to chase up an ECU to run the show. Now I can have dual fuel turbo goodness |

I bought a factory petrol tank last Thursday. Im gonna chuck the LPG tank in behind the front seats and put the petrol tank where it is supposed to be from factory.
When people convert these things to LPG they take out the stock petrol tank to fit the LPG tank and fit a small petrol tank under the floor next to the tailshaft. It holds bugger all fuel. Now Ill have 200ish litres of fuel all up which will be good for the trip to tassie at the end of the year and I can worry less about smashing the LPG tank on rocks. Settlement for my project house was on Friday and because I have a winch I thought it would be fun to use it. House before: House during: House After: |
