Hey there, after recently realising that my NF is never going to set the world on fire as it's a daily driver 5lt running LPG I've decided that I should extract the digit and get going on getting the ZD up and going.
The story so far, I bought the car in the early eighties to replace my ZB (302W / top-loader) that had been my pride and joy, but, had just been rejected from the panel shop for terminal termites after i put it in for a full respray, I got the ZD from a biker working at a wrecking yard, who bought it from another wrecking yard guy who used to race it at Castlereagh Raceway, needless to say they had both flogged it, but hey I'm a sucker for these big Henries. The ZB that had to go my first Fairlane died two owners after me when she went a** first into a telegraph pole at 70mph, apparently the p/side tai-light was right behind drivers seat - luckily I never saw that! Attachment: zb02.JPG The ZD as bought! Attachment: ZD shot1.jpg Details:- 351 Clevo, Borg Warner 4 speed, changed to top-loader from ZB, 9" diff Enkei 3-piece aluminium wheels 14x7's and 14x8's on the rear, man she was rough though, the guy had sold off the big 351 tailshaft and put a station wagon shaft in by tacking it (almost) in the centre of the rear yolk - slight vibration over 80km's. He told me it never got hot either - the temp sensor didn't work! Then off to panel shop instead of the hapless ZB. Attachment: ZD shot2.jpg back to bare metal Attachment: ZD shot3.jpg Attachment: ZD shot4.jpg Next the first touch of colour - Midnight not midnight blue, non metallic XD colour You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Was waiting to see if you would throw up a build thread on the ZD after seeing your signature
Should look great once the body is sorted out and a fresh lick of paint is on it. Will be watching this thread to see how the work on the Lane progresses |

Did the car originally come through Claus? He had the wreckers at Riverstone and run a few things at Castlereagh. He used to run a rough as guts XA GT coupe on the bottle.
Looking forward to watching the story unfold.

Well back from the nats - new plates and new mirrors XB plastics ( no one wants them ) at least you can see out of them!
Attachment: ZD shot10.jpg Engine bay was a bit rough! Attachment: ZD shot11.jpg Of course the engine bay job was not without the usual share of bad luck - Hail! the house lost 7 windows down the side and front! the mighty fairlane lost two chrome strips! Check out the reflection on the sills! Attachment: ZD shot12.jpg But she tidied up enough for the 1986 State Nationals at Miranda Attachment: ZD shot13.jpg Attachment: ZD shot14.jpg At the show I was asked by Street Machine Editor to do a photo shoot, but I said I wanted to get the interior done done first! Guess what happened next, it was off the road with stripped interior, using my sisters VW to get to work, we had a bit of a sibling rivalry attack so I chucked in a spare bucket seat, no dash, no carpet etc and this happened........ When I built the Clevo up my mechanic said that with a big block in it I'd have to undo engine mounts one at a time and jack up engine to change plugs! so I stayed with the Clevo!

So there I was getting the trim done for a Street Machine photo shoot, then due to previously mentioned reasons I had to take her to work without interior or dash etc and was hit by uninsured single mothers pensioner with no insurance, I had none either as I was waiting for re-trim to be done and get a new quote for increased cover and well there goes the photo shoot as I was out of cash!
OUCH! Attachment: ZD shot15.jpg Meanwhile the paint on the top of the car was going a bit strange so when I finally got enough neddies together it was back to the panel shop! Attachment: ZD shot16.jpg Attachment: ZD shot17.jpg Must've come up alright as it won Best non-club car at XW-XY Owners Concourse Day despite being over an hour late! Attachment: ZD shot18.jpg

Well a few things have happened since then, another respray - I'll spare you more shots of that! then I decided to give the ol' girl a engine rebuild, so I got hold of these goodies for the build- up to come
- 4V close chamber heads (with dot) - Milidon 4V Stainless valves and forged retainers - Isky Triple valve springs - Ford Motorsport cam 256/262 duration @50thou, 589/608 lift (woo hoo) - Forged Flat tops with moly rings - Milidon rod bolts (more about those later) - XD black block - Roller rockers - Supa pan sump - Milidon hi-vol oil pump -New Pacemaker Extractors with HPC hot coating - Predator Carb - yes this was a long time ago - Ross Harmonic balancer Had the whole thing built professionally, balanced, rods were fully prepped heads had valve guides and seats fitted for ULP, engine was then run in on Dyno, were carby was replaced by 750 vac sec Holley and got just on 400HP (25HP less with predator), brought the thing home slapped on a 830 annular discharge Holley (no choke facility) and blew the a*** out of it tuning in the carb! - more soon!

sweet build thread mate. i would have loved growing up in those days, there was heaps of cool old cars back then. i love hearing my old mans stories of the same vintage, i got the impression you could get away with just about anything back then.
the car obviously holds centemental value being in the family so long, will watching with interest |

Thanks dahayes - settle down on the old man stuff though!! Yeah at the time I bought the ZD, one mate had just sold his ZB and bought an ex-highway patrol XC coupe (hardtop for the fussy ones) and my then bro-in-law had a 351 XB Fairmont coupe and another had a 302 XB coupe so we certainly had some fun hooning about, but you could do almost anything as there were hardly any ADR's (Aust. design rules) let alone pollution laws - the only ADR's on the ZD relate to seatbelts! I'm just trying to get the ol' girl moving along again with a new Clevo getting sorted, will be a budget build but still 4V heads solid lifter cam giant carby nice ol' school build with aerodynamics like this who worries about fuel consumption!

Exactly, it's not like people drive 240kmh all the time every day!! It's different if it's a track car or something, but ya can't go past big f**k' cars with big f**k' engines
