Hi John,
Thx dude. Yep, i swapped in a 253 (this van was a bare roller when i bought it), which is only going to be in there for a while until something else goes in there. This 253 was in another van that i bought to rape for parts, a HJ van, and it wasn't too bad on fuel. I've got a 4bbl rochester on it with a sprint gas new gen mixer setup, once it's thru rego the LPG will be hooked up & made legal, so the fuel bill won't be too bad. If i can get the cash i can have a hot 308 my older brother has under his bench in his shed. I'd love to fit it with a pair of turbo's & a pair of gas research carbies, but that's a lot of money better spent elsewhere for now.... A 289 & c4 is an unusual swap for a holden van, that's for sure! I've had a look at vid's on Youtube, there' s a couple of crazy boy's around, that's for sure. huggiebear -> I don't think it's big enough to cover the risers and fit correctly. Yeah, the van will be going LPG. Stuff paying that much for petrol! Cheers ToranaGuy

One last thing on 253 HQ-HJ's - I worked at Holdens as an apprentice at the time and one of the jobs we got was to work in the offices for 3 months - they didn't want to know us filthy little gits so they made us shred documents all day - some very interesting reading, like spec sheets for NSW and Vic cop cars...lotsa bits went in those 308's I'll tell you..anyway, I remember seeing a chart of best/worst fuel economy for the current year (1976 I think) - can't remember what got best economy, but worst was a 253 trimatic van... 308's in everything including vans and statesmans got better economy but yeh, LPG makes it all better - its the only way I can justify a 351 everyday...

That doesn't surprise me much at all mate!
A big 308 doesn't need to be pushed as much to move the van, which let's face it, altho it isn't so heavy, it's not all that aero dynamic is it? It wouldn't surprise me if the 173/202 6's got even worse economy in the van's than the 253, due to aero dynamics. As Huggie said, most of my car's are LPG, either straight or dual fuel. I couldn't afford to run them on petrol either. The little mighty boy is only on petrol because i don't drive it much. If i did drive it a lot, it too would be getting a LPG conversion. If i had money to burn I'd covert it to gas injection when i do the petrol EFI setup, but i don't unfortunately..... What do you know of engine blocks with NO engine number? I have seen more than a few 253 & 308 red motors from the HQ era with no numbers cast or stamped on the block, and they have not been ground off either..... I've been told they were warranty claim blocks, which dealers were supposed to stamp the original block number on, then destroy the original block. Any truth to that? I wouldn't mind my older bro's 308 with the suggested twin turbo setup backed by a fully manual TH700 in the van. That would be pretty fast & return reasonable economy too.... Cheers ToranaGuy

Time for an update i guess, done a couple of things thru the week, but nothing too major.
My replacement parcel shelf has finally dried out, but it's too wet outside to be able to swap it into the EB Ghia & swap over the seat belt to the correct for s2 EB item. Maybe i will get around to that this w/e, depending on the weather. I've finally finished setting up windows on my old "tune up" laptop, just need to install the EasyJet software now, then make a ghost image of it, so it's not so hard to reinstall if it breaks again. Damn you Winblows98! * shakes fist at laptop * I did a little cleanup & stock take of E series parts in one section of my shed, and sold an ED Ghia trip computer to a fordmods member. It's only a small part, but every part i don't need that i can sell is that one part closer to having a tidy shed! You can't work properly in a messy shed, well i know i can't. On that topic, i did get a bit more work done on my garden shed, which will house a lot of car parts as well as my mower & garden tools. Can't wait to get it finished, then i will have more space in my shed to work. I found these pics of my torry tonight when clearing off an old SD card. Shot back when i was a P plater - a long time ago lol. Attachment: My lh side shot 190403.jpg Attachment: My lh cd player1.jpg Anyway, got stuff to do, so i should hop offline. I better pray to the car gods for good weather this w/e to get some work done on my cars! Cheers ToranaGuy You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

{USERNAME} wrote: nice. i like the colour. i feel your pain with the weather, every day i get off work it seems to rain... Thx dude, but that color is about 30 years faded, it's a darkish metallic green when it's fresh. Rather dark until you hit it with some light, then it shines up. Color is called Montery Green, used a couple of times thru the 70's by holden, then once in the early 80's on a VC or VH commy. Supposed to look a little more like this color... It was one of only 3 options my torry was fit with from the factory! Others were AM mono radio & a High Compression version of the 173ci Red 6. No bucket seats, no floor mount manual gear shifter, no front disc brakes (assisted or otherwise), no rear demister, cross ply tyres, no 4 speed manual, no rear arm rests, very basic instruments. No retractable seat belts. lol. I have a 6cyl SLR full instrumentation cluster (Big $$$) to go into my torry when the time comes. The non retractable seat belts are better if they are adjusted correctly. Anyway, tonight i got a few things done around the house that should enable me to get some work done on the car's if the weather is good enough later today. Even if the weather is s**t, i can probably do some small task on some car parts in the shed, but it wouldn't be one of the jobs i need to do right now. I guess working on something is better than nothing right? Cheers ToranaGuy

Attachment: P1010033.JPG A shot of the drivers rear quarter, area in black is fresh steel that was welded in. Still a bit of work needing to be done to this quarter, a tiny bit of rust above the wheel arch & a few small dints to knock out of it. I put it there to get an idea of how 17's will fill the wheel arches. The stud holes on the FTR are very close to where the torry studs are on the 14.I think they will fill them very nicely. I have a set of 14x7 alloys that at one stage were on the torry, but taken off due to insurance not liking them, due to being 2" larger than the steel wheels the car originally had, but they are only 1" wider than the optional 6" steel wheels some torries come with. I dunno if i will end up putting the alloys back on, because i am planning a brake upgrade to a commodore setup, maybe vt up the front, and vh discs on the rear, (rear discs are the same from VB thru to VL and maybe even up to VP) and a VL borg warner diff. I don't think i will do that upgrade until after it's back on the road, it won't need the bigger brakes & better diff for a little while. I've got a fine spline banjo center & axels to go into my current diff, it will survive the turbo's power for long enough to save for a better diff. Cheers ToranaGuy

Your Torana is looking good, my mum used to have one, but in red.
I think you should F the FTR's off, on a car like that a set of old school 14" mags would look really tough But FTR's wouldn't look too bad on it. Do you have any more pics of it? Engine bay, interior or a whole body pic?

The FTR's are on my EB Ghia man, I have 14" steelies on the torry atm, and a set of 14" mags in the shed. I'd love a set of BA XR6 rims on the EB Ghia, but no money to buy a set with.
I don't have any real current pics of the torry, it's fairly stripped still atm. Cheers ToranaGuy

just sell off one of the XR8's, that will fund 2 sets of mags (for the ghia AND the other XR8) then a bit left over for fuel

I don't know if i could part with one, or the Ghia to be honest. I'm in no rush & I don't mind the stock Xr8 rims either. Cheers ToranaGuy
