Hey all, just scored a 5 speed 1 Tonne XH for $700. It has cruise, power mirrors but it does not have:
Keys RH door RH front panel And it has a few holes, dents and rust spots. I am pretty happy with it. All I need now is a door and panel. Any ideas? I would like to go the XR front but that will wait. I am off to a locksmith tomorrow to try and get a key cut, if not there are some on ebay or last option off to ford for an original. The engine looks good but we will have to see. Cheers

I was thinking f**k that's bargain, then you mentioned the lack of panels, still a decent price, but it'll be serious f**k getting them, funnily enough i know of panels, but I'm down south, it's annoying it had a good bonnet i was goonna get for somebody, but some wanker ended up bending it on us.

You are right about the guard.
Local wrecker has a couple of XG doors I might look at. Had to take the ignition to a locksmith yesterday as I couldn't get the key in. He ended pulling it apart and redoing the lock cost $140. Started car for the first time today. It was a bit ralltly till it warmed up. No smoke either. Drove it up the driveway and back. The clutch was a mongrel. As soon as you started to lift your foot it took off. Scared the crap out of me. Something to look at later. Photos soon.

With the clutch you can adjust that so it works a bit further from the floor.
But i like how it works straight up |

OK doors and guards are done.
Cost .. RH door $150 + 200km round trip to get it. RH guard $20 off ebay = $40 shipping (happy with that) Paint guard, repair both doors, swing them, replace front, align everything, rust hole in rh sill plus a free touch up on left ( the apprentice did the wrong side . $1100 Currently fighting with the bullbar. Some photos in my gallery. Hope to test drive this week

Yep, theyre different front quarters and bonnets to sedans/wags, and normally cost a fair bit if you can get hold of them.

Yes to all that.
When I got the car so cheap I had no idea how hard it is to get panels. The local wrecker has a stack but he is rebuilding one as well and wont part with them. Oh well, He had his first wash and polish yesterday and we are off to the steering shop now as it wont self centre. I am hoping it is just from the crash and it needs a really good alignment If not I hope it is not too bad as I am seriously running out of money. If we didn't have to drive it to newcastle in a few weeks it would still be on blocks.

Well the good news is that they do mod well - mechanically and electrically.
Steering wise, if you need to fit another rack, get an E series rack, preferably an EF or EL one - plenty of those out there. Then you'll have faster steering.

Well going to have to do that.
What exactly is the steering rack? Is it the intermediate shaft plus the assembly that goes to the tie rods? I don't know.

If you get a 2nd hand rack, make sure and get the shaft from the column to the rack as well. They can be different between EL/EF's and the utes. I got stung like that, luckily the wrecks in the back yard came to my aid with the correct shaft.
The steering rack assembly comes out quite easily, complete from tie-rod end to tie-rod end, disconnect the power steer lines, and the steering shaft and you are away. Two bolts hold it to the back of the k-member. Not much fun on stands, but it can be done. The steering shaft has a master spline, so make sure you line those up. Replace the tie rod ends while you are at it, there not too expensive. Good luck.

Well its out and I no expert but I dont think it is supposed to be cracked in half!
Could be the problem. Wreckers have them for $90 or recon for $400. mmm might try the wreckers
