OK, got a mate who is moving country, Glen Innes area, he and his girlfriend are looking for a reliable ute under 10k, would prefer duel fuel, under 200,000km something to resemble service history. not to phased on brands.

I think a 2wd hilux will shake itself to bits on back country roads, but I may be wrong. would prefer an AU ute or something similar, VT? or whatever came after VS utes in the holden lineup is also an option.

how do things like couriers and navaras and stuff cope with or compare to Fords and Holdens?

Let me know ideas, thoughts and if you can direct me to a car that may be suitable.

Dave

Pretty well anything Japanese will stand up to a lot of torture. More so than the Holden and Ford offereings. But the Falcons and Commodore utes are so much nicer to drive. They just have more space, more power, and drive more like a car, than a truck.

Go for a landcruiser!

More space and bigger motor than a Hilux

that would be the go alot of interchangeable bits from hilux to 75,78,79 to 80 to 100 series

he would pick up a decent 75 seires for around 8 or 9 depending were he looks

The cruiser trays, aren't very cheap. He may struggle to find a nice one for under 10k, that isn't older than 20 years+
Good utes though!

Ride: XH Ute

When I was looking a while ago, for around 10 k (maybe + a couple of grand - private sale / not dealers, otherwise add another couple of grand) you could get a Ford / Holden for around ute with around 100 k on it or for the same cost as a Hilux etc with around 200 + k on it.
I guess the demand for the Hilux's etc for a work ute, sees they hold value. I think you would be doing well to break one.

We figured at + 200 k the best of the vehicle is probably gone (it isnt getting any younger) and settled on an XH (which is still my current car and currently has around 200 k on it, with 100 k or so of that my doing..).

You could probably grab a decent XH for that sort of money, though they maybe a bit older than what you are chasing and parts arent getting any easier to source.

Lyle

yeah, landcruisers are out of the questions, to big for what he wants, and a "good" example of 10k and under is non exsistant ATM, 2wd is ther prefered option, been told to avoid couriers, bravo's and navara's pretty much anything south african built, possibly early feb would be a better time to look.

well if the cruisers are out of queastion there are some model rodeo's that are good the late v6 TF's are good... Hilux's are also good we have a current shape hilux for a semi-work vechile (boss's car) and it is quite nice to drive..

but what kind of terrain just rough country road (like unsealed road) a VU ute or AU or even a XG XH will handle it.... if it just the two of them a falcon or commodore ute would do...

i think they should work out what terrain etc and comfort etc etc no poind buying a big 4wd if they are just driving on a road that just unsealed (dirt roads) etc

Straight away i'd be crossing the petrol Rodeo off the list.
I wouldn't even consider the V6's in those things. It'd be cheaper to run a plane than a V6 Rodeo. The only good thing about the Rodeo, is that the diesels are Isuzu built.

I'd still either be looking at either a Commodore or Falcon ute for comfort, power, etc. Or something with a Toyota badge on it.

Take a new one for a test drive, suspect you will come to a similar conclusion even without considering any operating / maintenance costs.

The last one I drove certainly wasn’t like anything I was expecting - could have been a one off, though the one before was like it also (maybe it is me?).

The new Rodeo's aren't so bad. I'd still get a Hilux/BT50/Ranger over one.
Its the older ones (pre the current model) V6's that were unbelievably thristy. I mean guys were lucky to get better than 20l/100km's.
Thats why i'd only get one in a diesel.
