Hey all,
I'm not exactly WANTING a car part, but I am looking for someone that might live near Better Cars in Grimshaw St, Bundoora VIC to check out a vehicle for me. I'm in Sydney, you see. The only issue is its not a Ford - its actually a swedish brick (don't shoot me), but if someone is close by they might like to do me a big favour. I've been after one of these particular cars in auto for a long time and they are as a*** as hens teeth. Thanks Martin |

Hi chunkz,
For some reason I never thought of that, but in any case, if someone is close I wouldn't mind someone doing a quick walk around to ascertain paint condition, damage, rust in sills, bottoms of doors etc, and interior condition - would save me $130 to start with and its easy enough to do....before I even consider purchasing. They can sticky beak at any Fords the've got in stock for themselves at the same time! |

Hey dctodd,
I'm not scared of a bunch of ford freaks. Joke. The 850R would be nice but I'm looking at the GT. Martin |

Got a good mate witha 1979 242 GT.. you lookin at an NA or a turbo model? my mates one is NA at the moment but I will soon be sourcing a turbo manifold off a 244T wagon to bold up something to give it a nice 6-8 psi.. put this thing is a work in progress.. Its had a respray at some stage and I need to find the black stripes to put on again.. the drivers door needs to be replaced.. I have pretty much rebuilt the engine on it, the mechanical injection is a bit of a b**ch to get your head round, but is a similar setup to the 264GL baffel system..
the one your lookin at do you know much about it? do you know much about volvo's? what steered you onto the 242 GT? do you know what power steering setup and aircon setup it has as yet? we have ripped the piston aircon system out cause it was a crap setup that ceased.. we whacked a ford ea power steer pump on,, but there is an issue somewhere just a split hose.. but until that failed it was much better. If you need any tips or hints or help with it let me know.. i love working on these things.. simple as. and very rewarding. things to look out for.. rust in window frames, all the usual stuff, the solenoid overdrive.. if the solenoid is buggered then they are expensive to drive and a pain to replace.. they have a hydrolic clutch, make sure it has been serviced regularly. the clutch on the car itself is a little small for its application and can tend to shorten the life of the fluid.. other than that.. its a 26 year old second hand car..

Hey dctodd,
I'd assume this is a stock 79 model. Well, not actually stock as its actually auto, I'd say converted by the dealer when new or since. I think you might find it never had the black stripes - not all of them did. I've seen silver, silver with stripes, silver on black (I think) and all black. I think the stripes came in later models, along with the 5 spoke mags. This has the early GT mags that are pretty average. I think its the Torana it shares wheel offset with isn't it? Or is that 140 series? If it is, something decent could be found pretty easily. I'm assuming its standard volvo air, and no doubt needs gassing and has never been converted to the new gas. For starters I'd like to stick more recent tail lights and insert in it (see attached pic), although I think this insert wasn't an Oz thing on any volvos was it? Possibly quad headlights and we'll go from there. My brother has always been a volvo freak and even though I don't really get along with him that well, something has rubbed off on me. I've had a 82 244 at one stage which was fantastic, but I must have long legs as I feel cramped in them and ended up selling it. The 242 should give me a bit more legroom I think. If not I might have to look into changing rails so I can get that little bit more space.

Meant to add, although the pics on their web site are sh*t, it looks like it doesn't have huge cracks in the dash which is uncommon.
Just thinking too - I think it was in fact earlier 1 series that shared wheels with the Torana - the years fit anyway. M |

those tail lights look like an 1980 242 gt rear.. yeah quite a few were converted to auto by dealers. the moss 4 speed manual with solenoid O/D are good but.
"most" 1979 242 gt's had stripes, but then alot of them have had resprays.. does it have the round or square headlights? round = 1979 square = 1980

Round unfortunately. I think they look OLD, but there are so many options to easily fit something different, I'm sure that can be changed!
